Chart

The general cruising areas from Juneau are North and West or South and East.

North and West are Lynn Cannel, Icy and Chatham Straits. This area covers Skagway, Haines, Hoonah, Glacier Bay National Park, Chichagof Island and the West side of Admiralty Island National Monument. Glacier Bay is the favorite area for big glaciers and high mountains. Twelve Tidewater glaciers and Mt Fairweather at 15320' create a spectacular area. A vessel permit system is in effect from June 1 through August 31.

South and East are Stephens Passage and Frederick Sound. On the East side are Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness Area and Endicott Arm. There are three tide water glaciers in these arms. On the west side is Admiralty Island National Monument "fortress of the bear". There is a large population of Humback Whale in the Frederick Sound - Brothers Island Area.
